Our Annual July 4th Hometown Celebration in Murphy, NC

Highlights from last year's

3rd Annual JULY 4th

Hometown Celebration

Last year was our third and most successful year organizing this highly attended event at Konehete Park near downtown Murphy, NC. The brainchild of our first president, Marie Speigel, the event encourages local businesses to come together to support, sponsor and participate in this event.

Last year, the  5-K run was sponsored by Hiwassee Valley Pool & Wellness Center. Special thanks to Sheri Brydebell and Frank Mason for organizing it. With over 135 runners, this was the largest 5-K race this area has seen in some time.

“We really appreciate the Wellness Center’s involvement this year,” said BWOCC president, Jamie Keener. “The race adds another element of enjoyment for the day-long celebration at the park. A lot of volunteer effort went into this and we hope they will do it again next year.”

Events last year included a fishing tournament, field games, greased pig chase, peanut drop, music and great local food, artists and crafters. Once again, our MC was Gary St Pierre who did a great job keeping the crowd entertained.

“This year,  we added  local business booths.” said Jamie Keener, president of the Business Women of Cherokee County. “Crowds at this year’s event were estimated at over 5000, so opening it up to all businesses definitely
helped our local economy and our efforts to promote the “buy local” theme.”

The money raised by this event goes toward community charitable projects like “The Princess Closet” and networking, and educational opportunities for our members and the community.  We welcome you with open arms. Please inquire today about how you can become a part of our growing membership.

The "Peanut Drop"

Cherokee County Recreation Department director Phillip “Pee Wee” Davis and crew have been a major part of the event for the last 3 years. They coordinate the “Greased Pig Contest,” kids field games and the always popular “Peanut Drop.” If you've never experienced a "Peanut Drop" well....you'll just have to come to next year's event to experience it!

The "Greased Pig Chase"

Release a greased pig---yes, I said GREASED---into a crowd of three dozen children and watch the fun begin!  It's an old-fashioned southern tradition that is one of the major events kids look forward to at every July 4th event here in Murphy.
